UEFA is again organizing the 15th edition of the European Nations Championships, a competition that joins all the national teams in Europe in trying to qualify for the final stages of the tournament, which then crowns one nation as the European Champion that wins the Henry Delaunay Cup. The competition evolved slowly with the first five editions (1960-1976) having only the last four matches hosted in one country. This changed from the sixth edition onwards (from the 1980) for a full tournament of 16 teams. The 2016 edition will again increase the participants in the final tournament to 24 teams.
The first two editions (1960-1964) were called the 'European Cup' but since the third edition (1968) the tournament started to be called the 'European Nations Championships'. The final tournament is normally held in one country, although two editions of the European Nations Championship were co-hosted by two countries - Austria and Switzerland in 2008, and Poland and Ukraine in 2012. This is the third time France is hosting the European Championship, thus becoming the nation who hosted the most final tournaments, the previous hosted editions were 1960 and 1984. France also hosted the FIFA World Cup on two occassions: 1938 and 1998, and the FIFA Confederations Cup on one occassion: 2003. Italy won the competition in 1968 and finished runner-up in 2000 and the last edition, 2012. They also finished twice in the fourth position - 1980 and 1988, and hosted the European Nations Championship in 1968 and 1980.
The predecessor of this European competition was the 'Coppa Internazionale' that was played between the Central European Nations between 1927 and 1960. The competition was played on a home/away basis and reached six editions. Italy won two of them (first edition - 1930 and third edition - 1935) and finished second in another (second edition - 1932).

EURO 2016
The Italian Football Federation lost its bid to host the 15th Edition of the European Nations Championships to be held in the summer of 2016. The mascot of this edition is the super hero Super Victor. Wearing the blue kit of France with the number 16 (for the year 2016) and a red cape, Super Victor reflects the blue, white and red colours of the flag of the host country France. The cape, boots and ball are claimed to be the child's superpowers. The mascot was created by Groupe Zebra and its name was chosen by popluar vote in which 107,794 football fans participated. Super Victor won by 48%, followed by Goalix with 27% and Driblou with 25%. The name Victor is based on the idea of victory.
